On June 4, 2025, at about 1:45 PM, operatives of the Tarlac City Cyber Response Team conducted an entrapment operation in Tarlac City that resulted in the apprehension of a 15-year-old female grade 10 student, alias “Weng,” for offering unauthorized Do-It-Yourself (DIY) dental braces through social media.
The operation stemmed from the proactive cyber patrolling of Tarlac City CRT, during which they came across a Facebook post of “Weng” offering DIY dental braces for Php3,000.00.
Based on the investigation, the minor had been illegally offering the service for nearly a year, reportedly learning the procedures through online tutorials found on various social media platforms. These procedures were conducted in an improvised and unsanitary setting, lacking proper hygiene and safety protocols, which posed significant health risks and serious safety concerns to the public.
“Weng” is facing charges for violation of Section 33 of RA No. 9484 (Philippine Dental Act of 2007) in relation to Section 6 of RA No. 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012). However, due to her status as a minor, she was temporarily turned over to the City Social Welfare and Development Office of Tarlac City for assessment of her discernment in connection with the commission of the offense.
The operation aligns with the directive of Police General Nicolas D. Torre III, Chief of the PNP, to ensure prompt enforcement of cyber laws and to prevent the misuse of online platforms for illicit activities.
Police Brigadier General Bernard R. Yang, Acting Director of the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group, commended the unit for the successful operation. “We urge the public to exercise caution when availing of professional services online. Always consult licensed practitioners. If you encounter unauthorized medical or dental providers online, report them to the nearest ACG office so we can take swift action to protect public health and safety,” he said.
