On May 23, 2025, at about 12:30 PM in Iligan City, operatives of the Lanao del Norte Provincial Cyber Response Team (LDN PCRT) conducted an entrapment operation that led to the arrest of a 21-year-old woman, alias “Shaira,” for offering Do-it-Yourself (DIY) braces online.

The operation was initiated following by the proactive cyber patrolling efforts by the LDN PCRT, wherein the authorities discovered a Facebook post of Shaira offering DIY dental braces for Php1,500.00.

Upon her arrest, “Shaira” admitted that she had no formal training or license to perform any dental procedures. She claimed that she was offering dental services online as a sideline to help cover her tuition expenses, as she is currently a second-year nursing student. Investigation revealed that the suspect learned the DIY braces from the social media platform.

“Shaira” is facing charges for violation of Section 33 of RA No. 9484 (Philippine Dental Act of 1965), in relation to Section 6 of RA No. 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012).

The operation is in line with the directive of Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, Chief of the PNP, to intensify cyber patrolling and online investigations in the fight against cybercrime, ensuring a safer digital environment for everyone. Brigadier General Bernard R. Yang, Acting Director of the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG), commended the team for the successful operation. “We urge everyone to be cautious when seeking professional services on the internet. Only trust licensed practitioners. If you encounter suspicious or unauthorized dental providers, report them immediately to the nearest ACG office so we can act swiftly to prevent further harm,” he said.
